NCRF Kim Dore-Hackbarth Memorial Student Scholarship

The NCRF Kim Dore-Hackbarth Memorial Student Scholarship honors the life and legacy of Kim Dore-Hackbarth, a talented and dedicated realtime reporter who served Buell Realtime Reporting for more than 30 years before her passing in 2025. This scholarship was established by Kim's colleagues, family, and friends in partnership with the NCRF Trustees and Angel Gatherers Committee members. Kim's commitment to excellence and her passion for the profession inspired all who knew her.

The scholarships will be awarded annually to court reporting and captioning students who demonstrate excellence, passion, and need.

Two scholarship awards: $2,000 each

Scholarship requirements

Eligibility criteria

To be eligible to apply for the NCRF Kim Dore-Hackbarth Memorial Student Scholarship, students must meet the criteria below:

  • Be a current NCRA student member;
  • Be enrolled in a stenographic court reporting program;
  • Have been an intern in the past 12 months in any of the three career paths: Judicial (official or freelance), CART, or captioning;
  • Must have passed at least one of the program’s Q&A or literary tests at a minimum of 160 wpm;
  • Have a grade point average of at least a 3.5 overall based on a 4.0 standard or equivalent; academic transcripts will be requested;
  • Possess all the qualities exemplified by a professional court reporter, including professional attitude, demeanor, dress, and motivation as confirmed in a letter of recommendation.

How to apply

The following documents are required to be submitted for application:

REQUIRED: File names must include the student's last name and first name. Files without the student’s name in the file name will not be reviewed.
Format: LastName_FirstName_DocumentType
Examples: Smith_Jordan_Essay.pdf, Smith_Jordan_Transcript.pdf
  • Instructor verification form (required): Instructor/supervisor must complete the Instructor Verification Form (PDF) and email it to ncrfoundation@ncra.org by May 8, 2026.
  • A copy of the student's most recent academic transcript;
  • A letter of recommendation from an instructor or intern supervisor;
  • Essay: Court reporting requires discipline, integrity, resilience, and a deep commitment to serving others:
    In 500-750 words, describe the personal qualities that will guide you toward becoming an exceptional court reporter. Share a specific life experience that shaped your character, strengthened your perseverance, or deepened your sense of responsibility. How will these qualities influence the way you serve the legal system and the public throughout your career? 

Reminder: Files without the student's name in the file name will not be reviewed.
