In 2026, the NCRF Court to CART Grant became the NCRF CART Captioning Training Grant.

Grant overview

The NCRF CART Captioning Training Grant helps eligible NCRA members develop the specialized skills needed to provide Communication Access Realtime Translation (CART) services, regardless of their current reporting specialty. Established in memory of Eligio Antonio Rosario Sr., the late stepfather and lifelong role model of Rich Germosen, FAPR, RDR, CRR, the grant provides each recipient with a one-time award of $1,500.

Under the guidance of Patricia Graves, FAPR, RDR, CRR, CRC, recipients also receive a comprehensive realtime skills assessment, individualized mentoring, hands-on training, instruction in current CART technology, and educational resources to support their transition into CART services.

Eligibility criteria

To be eligible, applicants must meet the criteria below:

  • Be a current NCRA member in good standing.
  • Hold at least the Registered Professional Reporter (RPR) certification (Realtime certifications such as the CRR or CRC are preferred).
  • Demonstrate at least 96 percent realtime accuracy in judicial settings.
  • Have a strong desire to develop the skills necessary to provide high-quality CART captioning services.

Current NCRA Board members are not eligible to apply.

How to apply

IMPORTANT – Submission requirements:
  • File naming: Files must include the applicant's last name, first name, and document type. Files that are not clearly labeled will not be reviewed.
    Format: LastName_FirstName_DocumentType | Example: Smith_Jane_Essay
  • Essay pages: Include the applicant's name and the essay topic on each page of the essay.

Complete the online application and submit the required materials listed below. If you do not see the application, the application period is closed.

  • Complete the online application. The form will be available when applications open.
  • Submit a letter of recommendation from an instructor, employer or client who has received the applicant’s realtime text. The letter must attest to the readability of the applicant’s realtime text and the applicant’s ability to participate fully in the program.
  • Submit an essay of 400 words or fewer. The essay must be double-spaced and include the applicant’s full name on each page.

    Describe your motivation for pursuing CART captioning training through the NCRF CART Captioning Training Grant. Include:

    • Why you want to expand your professional skills into CART captioning.
    • What value do you believe CART services provide to individuals and communities?
    • How this training and mentorship will help you achieve your career goals and contribute to greater communication accessibility.
