Career Opportunities in Court Reporting

The New York State Unified Court System employs nearly 1200 Court Reporting Professionals statewide. Beginning August 17, 2017, we will start accepting applications for an open-competitive examination for Court Reporter (#45-801). The test is comprised of a written multiple-choice examination and a dictation performance test scheduled for December 16, 2017. New York State residency is not a requirement to compete in this examinations or for appointment from the eligible list. The deadline for submitting completed applications online is October 18, 2017.

Qualifications to compete in the examination include a high school diploma or its educational equivalent. In addition you must have either 18 months of general verbatim reporting experience* or, completed a formal program in court reporting and have 1 year of general verbatim reporting experience*. You must meet the above minimum requirements by the date of the test, December 16, 2017. The official Announcement provides further details and is available at the link below. A non-refundable application fee of $30.00 is charged for this examination. Application and fee must be filed ELECTRONICALLY at: www.nycourts.gov/careers/. An email address and credit or debit card are required for filing.

*Two hundred and fifty (250) days of per diem experience may be substituted for one year of full-time experience.
