MacCormac College creates certificate program for CART providers and captioners

January 8, 2013

In August, MacCormac College in Chicago, Ill. was notified that they would be receiving one of the four Training for Realtime Writers Grants tendered by the United States Department of Education. MacCormac College will use the $295,850 grant to create a new certificate program for CART providers and broadcast captioners.  In 2012, a total of $1.1 million dollars was allocated to four court reporting programs: College of Court Reporting (Ind.), San Antonio College (Texas), MacCormac College (Ill.), and Green River Community College (Wash.).

NCRA spent nearly a decade lobbying for the Training for Realtime Writers Act before finally having that language passed into law in 2009 as part of the Higher Education Act. Over that time, NCRA's Government Relations Department helped court reporting schools nationwide secure over $15 million through 32 Congressional earmarks and Training for Realtime Writers Grants administered through the Department of Education.
