Board Members Can Make a Difference!

June 15, 2011

NCRA Board Member, Nancy Varallo, owner of Court Reporting & Management Services of Worcester, MA, recently contacted the National Court Reporters Foundation (NCRF) regarding her interest in hosting a Veterans History Project (VHP) Day in Massachusetts.

The Veterans History Project (VHP) at the Library of Congress honors American war veterans by preserving stories of their service to our country.  The project depends on a vast network of volunteers, both individuals and organizations, to record stories that tell the history of our nation during wartime from the perspective of the men and women who were there.

Nancy had read in her March Board Book that NCRF has sent over 2,200 transcriptions to the Veterans History Project and to other program partners and thought that she could help us to increase that number.  Her goal was to transcribe 50 oral histories by Memorial Day 2011, so she contacted fellow court reporters from Massachusetts who were enthusiastic about the project and agreed to sign on.

Nancy's firm partnered with Quabbin Valley Healthcare (QVHC) of Althol, MA, to host the VHP Day event on May 21, 2011.  A team of court reporters, as well as non-reporter volunteers, went to QVHC and interviewed 12 World War II combat veterans and eight other wartime veterans. Additionally, 10 court reporters are interviewing family members who are veterans, and at Nancy's request, NCRF sent 20 pre-recorded interviews of veterans for court reporters to transcribe who were not able to attend the May 21st event.  As you can see, there are many ways to participate in a VHP Day.

"After talking with a number of residents of the nursing home about their wartime experiences, I was moved to tears," Nancy said.  It's been a lot of effort by a lot of people, but so worthwhile.  And, Nancy has already received a call from another firm owner who is interested in doing the same kind of event with her reporters - this project is another way to let court reporters shine!  She hopes that her efforts will motivate other court reporters across the country to host their own VHP Day to honor our nation's wartime veterans.  Contact  Beth Kilker Oral Histories Program Coordinator by e-mail or by phone at 800/556-6272 ext. 174, if you would like more information on hosting a VHP Day.

As of June 6, 2011, NCRF has returned 2,298 VHP transcriptions to the Veterans History Project and to other program partners.
