Behind the Pink Noise

It starts like this: "May we approach, Your Honor?" Any veteran court observer knows what this means. The lawyers walk up to the bench, the judge presses a button and static fills the room for somewhere between 30 seconds and forever. It's called "pink noise" (cute, eh?) because it's not as harsh to the human ear as white noise.
