Pennsylvania Justice Touts Videoconferencing

August 30, 2011

Toward the beginning of his 13-year tenure with the U.S. Air Force Reserve, Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice Seamus P. McCaffery was given a preview of the cost-saving and practical benefits of videoconferencing.

More than two decades later, McCaffery, the high court's self-titled "gadget guy," has happily welcomed the technology into state prisons and courthouses -- an initiative the Administrative Office of Pennsylvania Courts has reported as saving the state millions. But, as McCaffery spoke July 19 to more than 100 professionals in Philadelphia at a business technology summit, questions from defense lawyers remained about threats videoconferences pose to court proceedings.
