Members Have Say In Election, Bylaws Vote
For the first time ever, NCRA voting members were given the chance to vote from their homes or offices on the bylaws amendments and contested elections at the NCRA Business Meeting on July 24. Voting on contested elections and the amendments commenced following the close of the business meeting. All NCRA members who were eligible to vote, including those onsite, used the new computerized voting system during the 12-hour window for voting. Members who were not on site were able to review the meeting through both the realtime transcript and a video streaming feed.
The number of voting members who participated in this year's elections was 1,228, approximately 8.7% of the total number of eligible voting members. This compares to the 151 voting members who were present at the business meeting in Anaheim.
For the position of Vice President, Melanie Humphrey-Sonntag, RDR, CRR, of Wheaton, Ill., defeated Jason Meadors, RPR, CRR, of Fort Collins, Colo., 618 votes to 509.
For a three-year term on the Board of Directors, Tami Smith, RPR, CPE, of Lansing, Mich., defeated Donna Collins, RPR, CRR, CCP, FAPR, of Dallas, Texas, 519 votes to 470.
The amendment to add CART provider to the list of categories that could be considered eligible as a Participating Member was adopted by a vote of 1,035 to 41.
The second bylaws amendment, which both simplified the definition of student member and dropped a clause limiting students to be eligible for student membership only four times, was adopted by a vote of 989 to 44.
A third bylaws amendment, put forth by 168 NCRA members, sought to open affiliated court reporting associations to more than one per state in states with more than 10 percent of the membership. This amendment was adopted by a vote of 751 to 290.
The voting members who attended the meeting also elected the uncontested officers and directors for the 2008-2009 Board of Directors.
