Latest News In Engate Litigation

October 23, 2004 - LegaLink, one of the defendants in the Engate litigation, has settled the lawsuit by adopting LiveNote's realtime licensing plan. Perry Solomon, CEO of WordWave (parent company of LegaLink), states in an October 10 letter, "Despite our initial legal victories, Engate continues to accelerate its discovery of infringement by court reporters and clients. The agreements that we have reached with Engate and LiveNote will protect LegaLink's court reporters and clients from litigation."

Solomon also states, "Like the court reporters we heard from at NCRA, we also believe that the LiveNote/Engate agreement is not a perfect solution for the industry. However, we estimate that the lawsuit could drag on for several more years, and even if we are ultimately successful, a victory would not protect court reporters or attorneys from being sued individually by Engate."

NCRA will continue to provide as much information and support as we can so that individual member reporters can make informed and independent decisions about what actions are in their own and their business's best interests with respect to the Engate patent infringement claims. NCRA will also continue to help facilitate the defense of those member reporters who have decided to join the joint defense group.
