Legislative Boot Camp

2016 Legislative Boot Camp

In March 2013, nearly 60 court reporters came to Tysons Corner, Va. to attend NCRA’s Legislative Boot Camp, a program that instructed them on how to promote and protect the legislative interests of court reporters. The first two days of the three day program encompassed seminars where state leaders learned about the politics, grassroots lobbying, promoting their profession, communicating with the staff of an elected official, and went through rigorous role-playing to prepare for their day on Capitol Hill. The final day of Boot Camp allowed all attendees the opportunity to meet with their elected officials in Congress. Each State Leader got the opportunity to go down to Washington, D.C. to walk to halls of Congress and get to meet with their Senators and member of the House of Representatives. During the meetings, state leaders discussed the Local Courthouse Safety Act, legislation that would provide state courts with excess security equipment held by the federal government. At the end of the day, NCRA held a reception for all Boot Camp Attendees with Florida Congressman Dennis Ross, a strong supporter of the court reporting profession.
